Tepache – funky pineapples

Tepache

As I’m someone who seems to drink for a living, my house is full of booze. Combine that with enough laziness to not want to carry heavy things home from the supermarket, and I have a fridge that is bereft of soft drinks. With summer (intermittently) upon us, I need something that I can drink to stay hydrated, and for that, booze is not my friend. Time to make some Tepache.

  • An excellent Saturday and a top Gin and It to close it out – @brewdogdistillingco prototype gin and #Carpano classic vermouth – with some @tomscottgo at the RI in the background. Tom knows things and knows how to say them so they are very understandable – I steal as much as I can from his talks and videos.

  • Finished this last night, so thought I better get my tasting notes up on my blog. And a pretty(ish) picture here. Solid @laphroaig, which is mildly damning, but actually meant to be complimentary.

Link to notes, as ever, in my bio.

  • A rather good night of @burningskybeer at @beerburgerstore #willesden – the launch of Cuveé 2019, Saison de Pêche, Anniversajre 2019 and Imperial Stout 2019. And a bonus Four Friends (lookout Brussels - other people can do ‘Lambic’) (thank you Ella). Excellent beer and company. I’m now eating chips on the bus.

  • Second night of @smws_uk drams – tonight a tasting at @abbotshillwine with @seandhadialla. You don’t often see .1 bottles open these days – especially not a peated Nantou that I failed to get in a ballot...

Intense, but not necessarily all in a good way. Like cough medicine, with a slap of sweetness and concentrated fake fruit. The sweetness balances out the acidity, but it goes medicinal on the finish.

Reminds me of the first time I tried a Lambic – squashed unripe peaches, buckets of damp leaves, mulching apples and a hint of gravel. Loads of tart fruit on the palate - the peaches and apples with some sharp pineapple. Pickled onion Monster much finish.

Better with a bit of warmth. Tart nose with a soft and fruity centre run through with gentle white wine acidity. White wine returns on the finish.

2019 edition. Not as fruity as previous editions, but rich with vanilla, milk chocolate and used coffee grounds. Thick and saucy center, with an almost creamy texture. Coconut, vanilla and coffee finish. Some tart red berry notes appear as it warms up.

Sharp nose – white wine and cider vinegar, and a touch of blankety funk. Palate is softer. Buttery centre with Granny Smiths, gravelly edges and a compressed core of estery fruit: Underripe peach, nectarine and crunchy pear. Finish picks up the acidity.
