Quick Tastings – #EBBC13

#EBBC13 Keynote - Garrett Oliver

I tried a bunch of beers at the European Beer Bloggers Conference, so here are a few that haven’t been mentioned elsewhere – the keynote beer and the rest of the Speed Blogging beverages:

My traditional Christmas leftovers pie, featuring My traditional Christmas leftovers pie, featuring nothing that was made until after Christmas – turkey and ham (breast steaks as there was nothing else left, and a Coke glazed ham from last week) with leeks (all now finished) and carrots (so many left…) all in a cream-forward (bought just for the pie) bechamel. Jus-rol pastry, of course, as I am lazy and can’t make pastry, and ready-made works lovely. It is ace. Pie for the win.

A couple of summary pics from over on @billyscoffe A couple of summary pics from over on @billyscoffeepics – every cup of coffee (ish) that I drank in 2022 and all the cappuccinos I made. There’s definitely some progress on the cappuccino front. The mission to photograph all of my cups@of coffee for no particular reason will continue, as will the writing of the script to automate the data retrieval and generation of these montage pics. I still like writing code, even if it is Perl…

A cast-iron pizza experiment, after watching @josh A cast-iron pizza experiment, after watching @joshuaweissman’s ‘how to make domino’s at home’ vid – my first homemade pizza dough. I over-thickened the sauce and put on too much ‘nduja (which went very grainy), but otherwise: success! I only managed half of it despite not having eaten all day…
.
The recipe was for three pizzas, so 1/3rd of the dough went into the freezer and the other became raisin bread, with a light dusting of brown sugar – sweet and salty and excellent with a drizzle of @citizensofsoil olive oil (which I also used to basically deep fry the pizza…).
.
More experiments to follow.

Last gig of the year. An excellent end from @clutc Last gig of the year. An excellent end from @clutchofficial at @roundhouseldn. The second @per_wiberg comes out you know you’re in for even more of a treat. I’ve also noticed that my gig pictures (even from the olden dayes when I used to do it properly) always seem to focus on the audience…

I like @o2sbe. And not only because it’s near my I like @o2sbe. And not only because it’s near my house. My most visited venue in the past decade and this @kulashakerofficial gig continues the run of seeing excellent bands. Which I’ve got home from easily. First gig in ages where I wished my knee worked better and I could go and bounce down the front again…

Great night out at the @sikthofficial 20th anniver Great night out at the @sikthofficial 20th anniversary tour. Can’t find the ticket, but I first saw them back in May 2002 supporting the (excellent but defunct) Mad Capsule Markets, and then went along every time I saw them pop up. Tonight they showed that 20 years on they still know how to do an excellent show, although I am not quite as up for a circle pit as I once was…

It’s my birthday and I’ll mix my drinks if I w It’s my birthday and I’ll mix my drinks if I want to. Well, not strictly *my* birthday, but 13 years ago today I first posted on a website called Billy’s Booze Blog and ‘officially’ decided to focus on writing about drinks. Then I was a computer programmer who liked booze, now I’m a drinks professional who knows more about computers than people often realise.
.
Tonight’s beverages are one of my longtime favourites – @stgeorgespirits pear brandy, which tastes like the back of a piece of freshly peeled-off pear skin – and @decadentdrinks third Cognac Sponge bottling – spirit that reminds you that there’s much more to Cognac than the big four houses. Here’s to a few more years.

  • Billy A. is drinking a Black Heart by BrewDog at BrewDog Ealing February 4, 2023
Like Jet Black Heart but without the chocolate, tending more towards the drier style they’re obviously chasing. Nice and quaffable but maybe a bit light – not as roasty as I’d like, even if it does have lots of chocolate malt bitterness.
  • Billy A. is drinking an Oude by Funk Factory Geuzeria at BrewDog Ealing January 31, 2023
Our quiz runner-up reward. Big citrus and orange peel, dipping into chocolate. Massive woody caramel and toffee. Caramelised orange peel and toasted oak on the palate, with soft carb and loads of juiciness. Toffee lingers into the finish and beyond.
  • Billy A. is drinking a 19|Gose - Solero V2 (2022) by Brew By Numbers at BrewDog Ealing January 16, 2023
Not quite as over the top as V1 and much more beery. Still tastes like a melted solero.
  • Billy A. is drinking a Post Mortem #2 (Pinot Noir) by Barney's Beer at Untappd at Home January 8, 2023
Smells very similar to the Chardonnay in the nose the palate has an extra funkiness. Started as a red wine vinegar edge, but that quickly fades (as you get used to it) just giving a spicy, dark fruit aspect.
  • Billy A. is drinking a Post Mortem #1 (Chardonnay) by Barney's Beer at Untappd at Home January 8, 2023
Soft and wheaty with a gentle sourness and a touch of white wine fruit. Flat as a pancake, so more wine-like than beery.
