Bathtub Gin – World Gin Day

Bathtub Gin

It is, yet again, World Gin Day. As is law, today I will drink gin – this year at Junipalooza. But, in a departure from usual, I’ve also made some. Well, started the process anyway – it takes a day or so to make bathtub gin.

So, I might have made a sandwich for breakfast. Toasted muffin, thick cut smoky bacon cooked in the oven, egg fried in a ring in a vaguely successful fashion, and home-made processed mature cheddar (cheese, milk and sodium citrate melted together and then fridged until cold and sliceable). It was rather good. The egg was gooier than it looks. Sauce would have worked, but is not canon in the McDonald’s universe.
The hit of yesterday’s Easter Sunday picnic – @kanpailondon and @gosnellsmead Bee Sake. A mix of sake and mead further fermented with sake yeast. Dry but with solid perceived sweetness, layered sake and mead fruitiness, and yeasty breadiness. Just the thing for an afternoon hanging out on the Scrubs.
It may be forecast to snow next week, but time for my first ice cream of the year. Badly melted and refrozen pseudo-Feasts were all the corner shop had to offer, but fortunately I encountered an ice cream professional who knows how to keep a freezer on.
Right, this is definitely my last adventurous sandwich for a bit. This was good: grilled Korean(ish)-style marinated pork shoulder steak (gochujang, sesame, garlic, Korean chilli flakes, soy, honey), on a toasted ciabatta smothered with more marinade, topped with sriracha-and-garlic-yoghurt-dressed lettuce, melted cheddar (only a little bit) and kimchi. I need to have a lie down.
Well, I think that’s for me and sandwich making – I have peaked and it’s all downhill from here. So: warm ciabatta toasted with @citizensofsoil olive oil, topped with beer-and-smoked-paprika braised pork belly, roasted long sweet red pepper, Mexicana cheese (because I am a cheese pervert), and garlic-mint-and-sriracha carrot-and-red-cabbage slaw. I might have to start eating salads for lunch now. I do have a lot of slaw that needs eating...
Mission accomplished! Chilli @marmite acquired thanks to the excellent @seandhadialla. It tastes a bit like someone put some chilli in Marmite. Of which I approve.
A pairing courtesy of @the_natebrown, @easysocialco and @sirencraftbrew to finish off my week – an Old Fashioned with @jimbeamofficial and Nate’s Old Fashioned mix, alongside the Siren Re-fashioned, a rather silly bourbon-barrel-aged barley wine with some barrel-aged IPA and sour beer to try and match the cocktail’s bitters. Both excellent: the cocktail is slightly too sweet for me but is appropriately deep and rich and tasty, while the beer leans towards an Old Fashioned while still being a borderline sticky barley wine. And now I sleep...
Because people asked, here is some more borderline pornography in the medium of ‘sandwich’. Square sausage from @macandwild_butcher with a fried egg and some sriracha. The bread is emergency bread from the freezer, toasted due to being cardboard-like otherwise. To be honest, it was mostly there as an edible sausage holder, a phrase that I immediately regret typing.
Well, that’s the first tasting of this year’s virtual @whiskyshow done – waxy whisky. It was on the stunning side. It’ll be up to watch on the @whiskyexchange FB page shortly, and we’ll be back on Friday for some old-school Longmorn.
Dinner prep beverage from the weekend – @makersmark boulevardier: 2:1:1 whiskey:Carpano Classico:@campariofficial. Tonight, I eat left-over red cabbage with whatever I can forage from the leftovers section of my fridge. And probably some chicken.

Solid porter. Surprisingly creamy with an appropriate hint of Marmite.

This is rather good. Big burst of cider on pouring and then dry as a bone sour balsamic strawberry. There’s an apple-y background layered with tamarind and thick fruit.

Orange and peach juice with a touch of chewy refresher and old ladies' hand cream. It gives with one hand and takes with the other...

Murky as, with stacks of raisin danishes.

A big punchy without quite enough flavour to back it up. Some fruity goodness, with a solid booziness.
